Bendigo Bank

Introduction

The Bendigo Bank operates on a philosophy of giving back to the communities in which it operates, and this was a key consideration in developing the building to house its new headquarters in Bendigo.

Gray Puksand and BVN Architecture were commissioned to design the new headquarters. The final design not only won multiple awards including an RAIA National Award for Commercial Architecture and National Commendation for Sustainable Architecture, it was also the first, five star Green Star rated, commercial building in a regional area.

As a multi-award winning, national design practice, Gray Puksand ensures its design solutions are carefully considered and with merit. The company chose to work with Designer Doorware to provide architectural hardware that offered a minimalist, contemporary look and suited the ergonomics of a commercial project.

Project Brief

The bank wanted to centralise all of its corporate activities into one site, located in the heart of Bendigo’s heritage precinct. A major challenge was to integrate the new building into an existing context including an existing building and laneway, while a key emphasis was to reflect the bank’s community values, culture and aspirations.

Response to the Brief

The design solution for the new headquarters was a master plan that created a new public space comprising new lanes, a retail precinct and a re-activation of the local waterway. The building itself was designed as a low rise campus with a key emphasis on transparency to the greater Bendigo community and the bank’s customers.

Large floor plates connected by atriums that flood the interior work environment with natural light create this sense of transparency, while a north facing saw tooth roof maximises the daylight that reaches the building’s interior. To reduce the harshest western sunlight, the facade is covered with perforated aluminum screens in colours that reflect the surrounding environment.

The sustainable building design led to major reductions in energy consumption (around half that of a typical building of its size), and is one of the first, large-scale applications of under-floor air-conditioning in Australia.

Architectural Door Hardware Solution

External and internal door hardware needed to balance the contemporary interior design of the building with an uncomplicated, sleek and slimline look that provided a careful and subtle complement to the design, rather than competing with it.

An extended length, rectangular G3018 pull handle was selected for entry doors to give a vertical emphasis with high functionality, while offering a perfect complement to aluminium door frames. Rectangular flush pulls FP903-100 further extended this look.

Our Catalina door handle provided internal doors with a contemporary edge, ergonomic comfort and flow. This was coupled with square roses incorporating privacy sets, E54 escutcheons, E51 turn snibs and E52 emergency releases, all working in harmony with rectilinear theme.  Narrow stile PS50 plates gave a sleeker, slimline look for narrow framed doors.
